Brief Profile  

Dr. Indrajit Mukherjee is a faculty member of XLRI Jamshedpur from 2010. His interests in teaching and training includes business turnaround, strategic transformation and growth, strategy implementation, stakeholder management and family business management. Born in a business family, he got introduced to issues in business from his childhood. With a hand-on industry experience of developing and managing new lines of business, and rejuvenating existing ones, his strength lies in his ability to connect business theories to practice – successfully developing the ability of students to think strategically and to apply the tools/theory learnt in a real business context. In XLRI Jamshedpur, he has been actively involved in administration of executive programs and training senior executives of industry.

Indrajit has a rich industry experience of 11 years prior to his PhD. He has been a corporate entrepreneur, having developed industrial burners and combustion system businesses in two different organizations, started a new company owned by his family members primarily. He has played the role of an angel investor in a finacial sector startup, where currently he directs the strategy. He also has helped entrepreneurs in developing, growing and turning around their businesses.  

In his childhood and early teens he was a state level player and later university blue in badminton. He was also a long distance runner and explored weight lifting, bridge, chess, drums and congo during his college days, and Indian classical guitar and yoga at a later date. He has assisted Yoga trainers. He has taught Yoga in a drug and alcohol rehabilitation center. He has been financially supporting orphans for their education for many years. In his childhood he tutored children of house maids; and in one case the son of an illiterate milkman, helping him get admitted in IIT Kharagpur in 1994.

In Wellman and Tata Korf, Indrajit has developed and managed industrial burners and combustion system businesses. In addition to managing the business performance of these profit centres, the jobs included absorption of state of art technology on industrial burners from foreign licensor; reverse engineering imported components and indigenized the technology; and developing innovative combustion systems to resolve customers’ problems better than competitors.

In a short stint in his family business, he had established a new company, and reoriented the strategy of the existing stagnating company to infuse growth. He is a member of the board of directors, of one of the fastest growing startups in eastern India in the financial sector – where he has been instrumental in developing the vision, mission and strategic direction. In XLRI he has guided several students of the entrepreneurship program in rejuvenating their businesses which were in difficulties. In an MDP attanded by business unit heads and functional heads in corporate headquarters, he has mentored the participants on live business plans.

Adminstrative Distinction

Indrajit has developed (from scratch), launched and managed the three year executive programme in Business Management in XLRI Jamshedpur. He has been involved in restructuring of different types of executive programme in XLRI Jamshedpur - general management program, three year executive programe and certificate program in the virtual platform. He has been the Chair of three year executive programme and Strategy Area.

Indrajit is a member of the BOD of Welfin Financial Private Limited (a financial startup) - where he has played the instrumental role in developing the Vision, Mission and Strategic Direction. The company is one of the fastest growing financial sector companies in the eastern India.
