Stan Thekaekara, Founder, Just Change
India, in his speech highlighted the shame-
less exploitation of natural resources in
the attempt to achieve accolades of a
developed country. He elucidated on how
the race for higher growth continues to
cause injustice to the marginalised com-
munities.
Dealing with the creation of self-reliant
communities through ownership of re-
sources, Michelle Chawla, Co-founder
of Tamarind Tree, spoke of the organisa-
tion’s venture into setting up community
radio. Chawla, based in Dahanu village
in Maharashtra, along with her husband
Hemant founded an organisation called
Nomad India – a non-governmental pri-
vate firm that manufactures transmission
system for community radio stations. Talk-
ing of their initiative, she stressed on using
technology to empower the marginalised
communities.
Kalyan Akkipedi, the founder of Proto-
Village shared his experiences in manag-
ing the task of making a prototype of an
adequate village cluster which would act
as a replicable model for integrated rural
development.
The need for promoting entrepre-
neurship at the grassroots level and the
importance of the availability of credit and
other financial products to rejuvenate the
local economy and fuel local entrepreneur-
ship were some of the other issues which
were discussed at the three-day event.

Providing Access for a Sustainable Society
With this theme, the conference aimed to
explore the broad areas where social
entrepreneurs could make a difference, by
creating effective mechanism to make the
resources accessible to those in need. The
format was designed to provide a platform
to leading NGOs to put forth their point
of view and network, liaison and promote
social entrepreneurship among students
and the community.

Solutions for Inclusive Development
The second NCSE was designed as a
working conference which encouraged the
participants to share, discuss and co-create
solutions/alternatives as a take-away, by
actively and collectively engaging in
solving problems of their interest and
concern.
edition 3: 2011
Youth, Development & Social
Entrepreneurship
The aim of the theme was to create a
platform for the youth (young professionals
and students – and the novice) to explore
social entrepreneurship space, to help them
understand the nuances, challenges and
opportunities in this field and showcase
some of the young social entrepreneurial
ventures.
edition 4: 2012
Entrepreneurship for Rural Revival
The theme focused on the creation of a
platform to explore the opportunities and
challenges for social ventures in rural
sector.
edition 5: 2013
Innovations in Livelihood Promotion and
Skill Development
The fifth edition of the conference explored
opportunities and challenges for initiatives
and ventures in the development sector.
The theme was taken up keeping in mind
the growing demand for livelihood
promotion, skill development and
vocational training.
