Varma

Current Position:

Professor of HRIR, Quinlan School of Business

Dr. Arup Varma

is a faculty at the Quinlan

School of Business, Loyola University

Chicago. He joined Loyola University

Chicago as assistant professor in 1996

and was promoted to associate professor

in 1999. He assumed the position of

professor in 2006. Dr. Varma has been

the director of the Institute of HRIR and

chairperson of the HRM Department at the

Quinlan School of Business from 2002-07.

He has won numerous awards and

accolades for his teaching and research

work. He received the Graduate School

of Business Faculty of the Year (Teaching)

Award in 2003 and 2012; Researcher of

the Year Award in 2004, 2011, and 2017;

Institute of HRER Outstanding Professional

Achievements and Service Award in 2008;

and Institute of HRER Faculty of the Year

Award and the Quinlan School of Business

Faculty Service Award in 2015.

Dr. Varma has been a visiting professor

at Aston University, Birmingham (UK),

Peking University (China), Xiamen

University (China), University of Göttingen

(Germany), Great Lakes Institute of

Distinguished Alumnus Award:

Academician

Management (Chennai, India). He has

presented research seminars and lectured

in numerous countries around the world,

including Cuba, Guatemala, India, Mexico,

Panama, Peru, Poland, Singapore, Taiwan,

the UK, and the US.

Dr. Varma’s research interests include

performance appraisal and expatriate

issues. He has published over 100 articles

and book chapters in leading peer-

reviewed journals such as Academy of

Management Journal, Journal of Applied

Psychology, and International Journal

of Human Resource Management. He is

the co-editor of three published and two

forthcoming books. He is also the co-

founder and former president of the Indian

Academy of Management, an affiliate of

the Academy of Management.

Prior to entering academics, Dr. Varma

worked for six years in HR roles for

some of India’s leading corporations. He

pursued his Ph.D in Human Resources

and Industrial Relations from Rutgers

University, New Jersey, in 1990.
