Jamshedpur also known as Tatanagar, is a city in the state of Jharkand in India. It is the first planned industrial township of India and is popularly known as the steel city of India. It was founded in 1908 by the famous Jamshedji Nusserwanji Tata, who also happens to be the founder of the famed house of Tata Steel.

Located in the East Singbhum district of Jharkhand on the Chotanagpur plateau, it is surrounded by the beautiful Dalma Hills and Subarnarekha and Kharkai rivers border the city in the north and west respectively. It is the 2nd city of India after Bangalore to be awarded the ISO 14001 status.

Connectivity

The nearest metropolitan city to Jamshedpur is Kolkata, the capital of the state of West Bengal. It is also the nearest city to Jamshedpur having an International airport.

There are daily domestic flights connecting Kolkata to Jamshedpur and takes around forty minutes of flying time.

Alternatively, Jamshedpur is well connected by train service which is much cheaper, to Kolkata and takes around 4 hours of journey.

Its proximity to Kolkata and Ranchi which are well connected to the all major cities of the country both by air and rail provides connectivity to all the major cities of the country.

Jubilee Park

This park is very special as it was inaugurated by none other than the first Prime Minister of India, Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru in 1958. Pandit Nehru loved children and this park was a gift by Tata Steel to the citizens and the children of Jamshedpur on the company's fiftieth year celebrations.

Spread over a vast area of 200 acres, Jubilee Park has a special rose garden and a lake. Beautifully trimmed Ashok trees line its avenues and there is a laser show, musical fountains and water cascades which are lit during the night.

Apart from children who love visiting the park, it is also a haven for morning walkers, joggers, cyclists and anglers.

Dimna Lake

Nestling at the foot of the Dalma Hills, it is an artificial reservoir which is the main source of the city's drinking water. The picturesque surroundings and the lush green trees providing cool shades make it a perfect spot for picnic tours. Nearby garden offers relaxing moments for visitors and offer exciting field for kids to enjoy the paying activities.

Dalma Hills

Located to the north of Subarnarekha River, it stretches for 16 kms from east to west. It is famous for herds of wild elephants. It provides facilities for trekking and mountain-climbing.

Jamshedpur enjoys a very strategic location in the heart of eastern India. The sprawling metro city Kolkata and the beautiful Digha beach are a stone's throw away from Jamshedpur.

The mind boggling Chandipur beach, the Gahimatha Olive Ridley Turtle Sanctuary, the Sunderbans (famous for its Royal Bengal Tigers) are also located nearby. Chandipur also has the Indian Army's Integrated Test Range (ITR). A number of missiles have been launched from the ITR including the nuclear capable Akash, Agni, and Prithvi ballistic missiles.

The proximity of the world-famous Jagannath temple and sea-beach of Puri and the sun-temple of Konark add further diversity to this awesome place.


Climate


The weather during most of the year is quite pleasant in Jamshedpur except during the summer months when it gets hot and humid. The temperatures then go as high as 38C.

In the winters the average temperatures do not go below 10C.

Industries


Jamshedpur was founded by J.N.Tata to start up the first iron and steel plant of India. Jamshedpur is a well-planned city having huge industries like Tata Steel and Tata motors. Tata steel and Corus now jointly stand as the 6th largest steel producer of the world. Apart from that several other industries like Jamshedpur Engineering and machine manufacturing Co Pvt Ltd (JEMCO), Tata Pigments Ltd, Tata Robins-Fraser Ltd (TRF), Timken, Cummins are also worth mentioning.
