Reflections 2014
R
eflections 2014
was organ-
ised by the youth wing of Cen-
tre for Education Management,
Leadership and Research (CEMLR, XLRI),
Samarthya, in January.
The conference, themed I Am Justified,
was attended by Fr S George, SJ, Dean
at XLRI, along with parents, principals,
teachers and students of different schools
in Jamshedpur. Schools attending the meet
include DAV Bistupur, DBMS, Loyola, JH
Tarapore, Little Flower School, Rajendra
Vidyalaya, Beldih Church School and
Chinmaya Vidyalaya. A total of 150 stu-
dents and 21 teachers and parents attended
the conference. The inaugural lamp
was lighted by chief guest Ruchi Naren-
dran, Chairman, SAFE, , Vice-President,
AIWC, and Managing Trustee, JEM Foun-
dation.
The format of the conference was a
blend of group discussions and fun ac-
tivities aimed at emotional realisation and
development. The students, teachers and
parents were divided into various groups to
discuss issues related to the theme with an
expert panelist and Samarthya members as
moderators. After a small break, the groups
came together for an open panel discussion
with the experts. The representatives of
each group voiced the conclusion arrived at
from their discussions. The most interest-
ing and thought provoking views came
from the students who said –- we know our
parents love us and want our good, but
then they must realise we also want our
own good, maybe in some different way
though.
The experts present were Nandita Sinha,
education consultant and counsellor, Dr
Sanjay Aggarwal, Head, Psychiatrist
Centre, Tata Memorial Hospital and Shalini
Sharma, Senior Faculty, Loyola School.
The experts spoke about how the times
have changed drastically.
The Samarthya initiative, hosted under
the guidance of Prof. ISF Irudayaraj, facili-
tated parents and children in understanding
stress factors associated with modern-day
lifestyle.
This was achieved through addressing
three scenarios related to changing lifestyle.
The group discussion on friendship had
three scenarios depicting various types of
problems that may occur between parents
and children. The students were very vocal
and clear about their ideas and the discus-
sions had some very interesting suggestions
coming from them. A similar group discus-
sion based on career helped understand the
difference between aspiration of students
and expectation of parents.
Parallel to the conference was a collage-
making competition for students. From
mundane parent-child conflict on career
decisions to world peace, from bosom
buddies to the concept of people coming
together in times of turmoil, the
teams handled each topic with adequate
maturity.
For the outstanding work done by Sam-
arthya during 2013-14 , convenors Alisha
Gupta and Ayushee Das were awarded Best
Social Initiative medal during the 58th
Convocation of XLRI.
