Pragyaan is an initiative where Samarthya conducts
regular weekly sessions for the children of the XLRI
staff members, and their relatives, within the campus
which addresses the gaps in a student’s understanding.
Samarthya’s focus is on lending a helping hand with
their education and developing their overall personality
so they become more confident in themselves. There
are more than 35 students registered for Pragyaan.
During the year of 2017, the team took the opportunity
to celebrate Children’s Day and Christmas with the
children, resulting in multiple shouts of laughter and
many smiles.
Career decisions are perhaps one of the trickiest
decisions in life which impact it in the very long term.
Disha is the initiative where students of XLRI had put
up stalls providing consultation on 40 different careers
for the information of more than 600 school children,
their parents and the teachers. A scientific psychometric
test was conducted for the first time which mapped the
suitability of the students into different careers.
Back to the Roots is a quiz organised by the team in
collaboration with Ensemble Valhalla 2017 for school
students from 10 different schools in Jamshedpur.
The quiz was designed to test the students on their
academic knowledge and their general awareness of
what is happening around them. The questions and
the quiz format was greatly appreciated by the school
teachers present at the event.
Samarthya
Samarthya is a student-run body at XLRI which aims to help young school students of Jamshedpur to realize
their full potential by developing a sustainable support system. There are multiple activities carried out by
Samarthya team of 32 within the campus and in Jamshedpur. The theme for this year was ‘Education for All’.
English Fair was held for the consecutive second year
at the Loyola High School (Hindi), Jamshedpur and saw
participation from 210 students. The event was conducted
with the intention of making the learning of the English
language as fun as it could be, through the means of
various activities where the kids ventured to express their
thoughts and creative ideas in English, under the constant
encouragement and supervision from the team. The event
was enthusiastically received and the team was sincerely
requested to make this event a more constant feature.
Reflections is an event which includes participation from
three highly interdependent parties – students, teachers
and parents. The purpose of the event is to make each party
aware about the different perspectives that the other parties
hold, with the major focus on the fact that communication is
the key to resolving conflict in any situation. Reflections, this
year, is designed to focus on EduStress - increasing stress
on students related to their education. This year Reflections
includes a special leadership training session for teachers
which is meaningful given the highly dynamic world we find
ourselves in.
Through the years, the purpose of Samarthya has been to
focus its attention on those sections and sectors where the
work of the committee adds true value. The target groups
might get modified over the years, however, the purpose the
change serves would remain unchanged.
