In another event that marked
cognizance of the increasing
emphasis on public policy among
companies, MCPR (committee on
policy research) was set-up as a
Student Interest Group (SIG) by a few
second year PGDM students of the
institute under the expert guidance
of notable faculty mentors.
With a primary focus on conducting
and promoting research in the
field of public policy, MCPR seeks
to provide a platform for debate,
discussion and deliberation upon
issues and topics ranging from
the monetary policy changes and
political maneuvers across the globe
to the nature of CSR, Sustainable
Development Goals and alternative
energy.
The group has organized regular
discussions by eminent thought-
leaders on critical issues. The most
notable events include a talk by Dr.
Nitin Kulkarni, IAS, MBA (IIM Ranchi),
MBBS who narrated a few dilemmas
from his experience in diverse roles
and was able to bring out operational
aspects of administration and public
policy in the interactive session and
an open-house discussion on the
tropical issue of ‘Jobless Growth’
which saw participation from
eminent faculty and a large number
of students. An interactive session
by Dr Jeevan Kumar, Consultant
to the Indian Institute of Public
Administration, Bangalore and
Visiting Faculty at the National Law
School of India, Bangalore, was also
organized on the theme of ‘Good
Governance and Corporate Sector’.
Another important area of focus
is undertaking of live projects
with various government agencies
and private sector organizations
under the guidance of faculty
mentors. Under its ‘
Samavesh’
initiative, NITI Aayog, seeks to
extend its institutional capacity
through partnerships with
reputed knowledge and research
institutions throughout the country,
in order to create an ecosystem
of evidence based policy research.
Through MCPR, XLRI is successfully
associated with this initiative, and
students under a faculty member
shall be involved in research on
the allocated research problem.
Further, MCPR has actively tied
up with several private sector
organizations to aid and advise them
on their social initiatives or strategic
programmes that aim at far-reaching
policy implications.
MCPR also set up a research
stall as part of MAXI Fair 2018,
to understand consumer attitude
towards e-waste and willingness
to pay for its disposal. The stall
saw a high amount of footfall
from multiple consumer segment
brackets, and the result of the
research may have implications for
MCPR
e-waste disposal policies in Tier-II
cities like Jamshedpur.
In order to promote policy research
and generate interest among
students at large, MCPR launched
its monthly magazine,
Abhijnah
,
which contained articles by
committee members and interested
students on topical issues such as
demonetization, the Rohingya crisis,
etc. A dedicated blog is also under
construction wherein such articles
from students, alumni and faculty will
be published on a regular basis.
In the short time that MCPR has
been functioning, it has also created
a strong social media presence by
regularly posting of articles related
to economy, polity or social decisions
across the globe. It’s initiative of
‘Policy Watch’ wherein a policy
decision is conveyed crisply and
concisely has become hugely popular.
The group would also be providing
information on career prospects
in the field of public policy in
government and its agencies, think
tanks and international organizations
such as the United Nations. There
are a lot of openings in the field of
public policy in private firms as well.
By coordinating with the Placement
Committee, MCPR will seek to make
such opportunities available to
students of XLRI in their internship
and final placements.
In the long term, the MCPR aspires
to evolve into a think-tank catering
to the developmental needs of
the country with special emphasis
on issues faced by the people of
Jharkhand. True to the spirit of Magis,
the group aspires to influence and
make contributions to policies that
will have a larger and positive social
impact.
