solidarity with
the marginalised sections of the
society, SIGMA, organises its
annual event Joy of Giving Week
in Jamshedpur. The fest engages XLRI
students in a wide range of activities.
A Gift of Time for the residents of
Nirmal Hryudaya (an orphanage and old-
age home in Jamshedpur) was an honest
reminder of care. The students visit the
old-age home during the fest every year.
For the recreation of children and the
elderly, students organised interactive
games and played some foot taping
tracks.
As the festival is all about giving joy,
SIGMA especially reserves a day to felici-
tate the 100 odd workers of the institute
by serving them lunch and breakfast. The
Among the social and cultural events
that constitute the week-long festival,
Beneficiary-Benefactor programme was
orchestrated for the upliftment of tribal
children. The student body volunteered to
raise fund for the education of children in
order to prevent dropouts due to lack of
funds. This programme includes provision
of tuition and hostel fees of the beneficia-
ries. The benefactors of the programme
include students and alumni of XLRI.
Beneficiary-Benefactor was a huge success
this year as it generated funds amounting to
Rs
2,20,000.
Extracurricular activity plays an impor-
tant role in the learning process of school-
children. Keeping this in mind CII-Yi
(Confederation of Indian Industry young
Indian) members organised Kshitij for chil-
students also organise a football match for
workers on Serving Those Who Serve
US day.
The Dramatics and Cultural Association
of XLRI performed street plays around
the city during the week to promote the
initiative.
Capacity Building Program for members
of self-help groups, now in its fourth year,
was arranged in association with NGO,
Kalamandir. With a view to empower
women to manage their own affairs they
were trained to assume the role of leaders,
taught about the rights and duties of mem-
bers, basic accounting skills and initiation
to savings and health insurance, loans and
the computation of interest rate. The group
of women was also taught marketing and
business methods.
The student societies at XLRI
once again come
together to give back to the
society through its
annual festival of philanthropy.
The acts of giving constituted
some old and new activities
performed with much enthusiasm
and fervour.
