ith a firm belief in our motto –
for the greater good – SAPPHIRE
organised Human Resource Foundation
Programme facilitated by Hindustan Unile-
ver Limited. The three-day workshop saw
experts in the field from HUL come down
to campus to share a practitioner’s insight
into some of the most pertinent topics from
an organisational point of view.
Breaking the proverbial shackles, the
first session dealt with abandoning the silos
into which the field of HR has long been
in. The session on HR Business Partnering
was conducted by General Manager HR –
Marketing, HUL, Amrita Padda. Padda,
who is also an XLRI alumnus, used out of
the box case studies to generate interest and
to make the session interactive.

Head – Rewards (South Asia) for HUL
Aakriti Chandra was the speaker for the
second session on rewards. Students were
exposed to HUL’s benchmarking and
rewards system as it became evident what
made the company a top ranker among the
most preferred employers in the country.
Chandra answered student queries and clar-
ified the standpoint of the experts regarding
employee compensation both in the present
and expected future context.
The concluding session by General Man-
ager HR, Enterprise Support, HUL, Ganesh
Subramanian delved into the burning topic
of change management. Subramanian
(XLRI 1998 batch) expressed his views
on managing change through interesting

First Elevate and Escalate
Workshop 2013 was oriented
at giving a holistic view of the
problems one is bound to face
while starting up a business and
the ways to overcome them.
The contents of the workshop
covered various aspects of
business like start-up funding
and other finance related issues,
how to market the services/
products in the initial stages of
the business, the legal and IP-
related issues, and above all the
motivational aspects.
The workshop constituted
three sessions conducted by the
esteemed professors of XLRI.
It was an enriching opportunity
for the participants to gain prac-
tical insights into business from
seasoned faculty.
T
he junior team of
SAPPHIRE (Students As-
sociation for the Promotion of
Personnel Management, Human
Resources and Industrial Rela-
tions at XLRI) organised Body
Shop, a two-part event that tested
both the participants’ knowledge
and their ability to think under
pressure and make quick deci-
sions (not to mention the skill to
strike a good bargain). The first
part of the event was an HR quiz
that tested both theoretical and
didactic concepts and also knowl-
edge of the prevailing conditions
in the field of Human Resource.
The second part of Body Shop
was a simulation where all the
teams represented consultants
and HR managers from differ-
ent multi-national companies
and were given a fixed starting
amount and an equal number of
employees of varying nationali-
ties and values to start off with.
The objective was to maximise
your company’s employee value
by trading employees with other
companies in the market. The
values of the employees were
constantly changing based on de-
mand and supply and the figures
were visible to all the teams. And
just to make the game more inter-
esting and complex, extra points
were given to companies with a
diverse work force.
The event was a big hit with
students, with every team trying
to snag the best deal for them-
selves and trying to buy big.
